1. Memorabilia from ca. 1977
2. My 1980 13' Allison. Jay Cox and I had widened the 5.5" pad to 8 " right after I'd picked up the boat in Louisville, and that was too much: the tail ran deeper in the water. However, I let George Laycock (130lb) drive it in the 1980 NOA 40-70V Class Nationals (NOA had no weight limits in any class) and he won, beating the 85 Mariners that had dominated the class all season.
3. With Joe Burgess leading in the GP Nationals at Eufaula in 1981. I finally passed him but we both were disqualified for jumping the gun, so Danny Critchfield won in spite of running far behind us. Jay Cox said to Danny as we were waiting to be weighted, 'It's better to be lucky than smart', but Joe and I weren't smart or lucky that day.
4. John Calley and me somewhere in Central Texas, ca. 1983.
5. John Calley (333), me (853), Terry Strack (353), Texas, ca. 1984. The gray 13' (7" pad) was my fastest EP boat. John's driving my old red/white 13' Allison, Terry's in John's old orange/white 14' Allison. I won, but after I got out of their way in 1985 both John and Terry won a whole string of EP National Championships!
6,7,8. I got on a Johnson poster without ever driving a Johnson-?
9. My garage workshop in 1981 after Havasu. Unordnung, but very effective .... . If you look hard you can see my Rundquist pitch gauge on the workbench. I did my own prop work, discovered a camber effect that no one else understood at the time. Louis Baumann had let me use his Houston prop shop in 1978, 1979.

67 mph in closed course, marathon. Over 71 mph set up for record run, although the gray 1982 13' boat never had a chance for time trials. I ran before power trim was allowed, so I could have run upward of 69 mph in closed course with trim. However, I limited blowing over to once/year on the average.
Now, I've got a nutshell that will blaze along at 26 mph with a 1981 Evinrude 15! High winding little motor .... . I do admit to a hot head on the 15, but the APBA Evinrude 75 was stock.

thats cool as. i have a done 75mph with my mod 50 (still tuning majorly fat) 75mph with my single throat finger ported 70.
i do have a dead stock power head here thats been around the world a few thousand times.. is well run in and ill see what it does with that on.
its interesting reading your posts!! i love the 75's only motor to own :eek::cool:
i wish i could have been racing way back then!!

Im going to say 67+ at 840 lbs.with out power trim.That pic was 1987 KKK closed course nationals...#43 was Jeff Titus...Terry Strack# 353 won,Jeff Titus 2nd then me in # 302 finished 3rd. That was a great time...I remember my buddy Tim Toth said to give that thrust jack a couple more turns and I did... and me at 210 lbs...well it was all I could do to hold her down...after the race Tim said with a smile that he was only kidding... ps...#370 was Rocky Jordan

My 67 was with a radar gun. Close to my Aquameter speedometer reading. Today we have GPS.

We used an old Keller...cant say how accurate it was...just used as a reference point.We hung in there with the 43 boat(ran one of his props) but Terry Strack walked away from everyone.Never got that Keller past 66 on the old Delta but saw it a hair past 67 on the Critchfield.

Sam, did they run power trim in EP at this time, I was away from boat racing during this period (Darn Go Kart's) an don't know what went on. iF not, Neil has that boat about as high as i ever remember one running. For anybody that doesnt know Neil is Sam's son and was a great driver an National champion. Sam won't tell it, but he got Go Kart racing fever a few years ago LOL.

Yes they were running trim at this time. He always ran one higher than anyone I ever saw run one. Sometimes I think he ran it too high, May have actually hurt the top speed.
Damn carts. I can't even go in his trailer. The smell of tire treatment gives me the "BIG HEADACHE". However I do still love the smell of castor bean oil!!

:DThat was Rocky Jordan #370 who hooked it in front of #317 Gene Gary maybe 85-87 at KKK.Im pretty sure that Rocky Didnt get hurt.That earlier pic of # 43 Jeff Titus was with trim and we # 302 were still on the thrust jack.Maybe 87 was the first year for power trim in EP...its been a long time ago....I do remember that after running all those years with a thrust jack,when we did go to power trim I was dangerous with those buttons.......

This is Roger Prosser's Critchfield, with S.M. Gordon driving at Geogretown S.C. could have been NOA nat's. Roger was a real character i have a few storys about him for later. The name of his race team was E.T Racing ( Early Times Bourbon). This is a bad pic but the only one I have, Roger taped it on the wall of Dad's shop 30 year's ago and its been there ever since till tonight. Sam may remember him.

You are correct about him being a character. Were you at Hazelhurst when he ran the v bottom up between two cypress trees. Roger was the announcer for our last NORA race at Bucksport. He did it on short notice and did a real good job.

I was actually looking in my journal for notes regarding Dieter Konig and came across notes where you and Sue Ann Callahan were in a battle at the Palacious Firecracker 200 in 1976. A great year for fireworks. You were the victor Joe, and when I can pull up those pics, I will post them.

Thanks, Wayne, good to hear from you! But it was 1977, not 1976. My 4th race in that summer of new beginning since 1960.

Roger Had been looking for a boat for a while ,he buys this Allison an motor an brings it to dad to ck out . Dad looks at the motor an calls Roger to tell him his motor is souped up to much an needs a new block.Roger does not understand this but buys a new block. when the motor is ready he an a friend come to get it. we back the boat in the shop Roger gets in the seat with his no telling how many glasses of Early Times. his friend Wayne an i are putting the motor on the boat, Roger is still in the seat drinking.Wayne says Roger you need to get back here an learn how to do this. Roger says Wayne i don't want to know nothing about that all i want to do is drive he must have said this ten times As Sam said in his post his first race at Hazelhurst GA. the boat hooked an went between two trees the front of that Allison was about 2 feet wide this was Roger's first an last race. He hired him a driver after that an raced for many years.Funny thing about the trees Roger owned a logging company

I think you're confused. I ran 40-50 Class in NOA at ages 15-17, set the record in 10/1960.
