Mirage Quartermaster Origins

I just read on another site an incorrect statement about the origins of the Mirage Quartermaster (aka 1/4 Master). I just thought it would be a good time to give the details of how the Quartermaster was actually designed.

The idea did not come from boats of the past, but instead was new twist on an existing modified vee tunnel with the pickles gone - leaving only the main running surfaces. (No pickles means a lot less weight.)

There are actually quite a number of boat companies who have used this "tri-pod" or "tri-maran" design. The tri-hulled Allison in the other thread is one, but in the past there have been a number of them, ranging from offshore racing to pleasure boats.

But with the Quartermaster, the overall body design came from careful examination of Formula One race cars. I remember spending quite a few weekends shopping book stores in Dallas in the mid-1990s, buying as many books on Formula One as I could find. ;)

Until Indy, I thought she was Pat Patrick's daughter...and I won't go into my opinion of Mr. Patrick....But, I feel this young woman can drive.....I'd love to see if she could ride a road bike....bet sh'e be a female Eddie Lawson...

I heard Robbie Gordon had boycotted the Indy race saying Danica had a weight advantage over the guys. I had to laugh, because I remember full well getting a HUGE jump off the beach because I was able to tuck my little legs clear up into the nose, and my seat was only 10" back from the steering wheel! My little boat SHOT like a rocket ahead of the boys.

Yes, being able to shift most of the weight full forward DOES give you an advantage, BUT it is equalled out when you get to measuring muscles. :) Especially when dealing with a very long race.

So Robbie needs to just hush up. ;)

I agree Val, Robbie Gordon and those like him need to put a lid on it. I first read about Danica Patrick in an article in Hot Rod Magazine "The Real Women Of Hot Rodding" and decided to keep an eye on her career. I must say I'm really impressed. She can just flat out drive! As to the weight difference, there are drivers on the circut at 135 lbs compared to Robbie's 200# and he isn't complaining about them. He also didn't mention that after last year's Indy/Charlotte driving feat, he said he wouldn't be doing both anymore. There was also talk that his NASCAR sponsors wanted him to stick with the one race.
I hope to see her do well. It's been a long time since I've cared about Indy racing, I was pretty upset about the split with USAC when it happened, but I"m going to follow it now. I like to see new talent who can shake things up with the "good old boys"

I actaully feel, cars should be weighed like boats...(Boat, motor and driver)....but when boat racing is as popular as car racing....they will change....

Shirley Muldowney used to live not far from me.The guys still talk about her street racing the Corvette on State Street in Schenectady New York.When she was touring with the Rail a good friend of ours Charlie Lundrum was on her crew and kept us informed of what was going on at the time. Quite the achievement for this lady. Bob

I cannot see how you think F1 and Champ or IRL cars are the same...They are the same considering they have 4 wheels and they all have some sort of similar shape but the cars are extremely different, specially an F1 car compared to a CHAMP or IRL car. The cost for a IRL/Champ car is only around 500,000 versus a F1 car which is in the around 2 to 3 million +. Not trying to knock you but just making a point that the 3 different cars are all extremely different...I guess it would be like trying to compare a Nascar versus a Hooters Pro-Cup car...they look the same, yet in actual comparison they are very different.

I will stand on saying that they are similar. Whatever it may be there is a lot of skill to be mastered to pilot either racing machine.
