Ladies and gents, I am new to this forum but have been interested in outboard racing since I was a little kid and used to watch the boat races at the Hutchinson, Minn. Water Carnival, in the early sixties.

I even got within a hairs-breadth, litterally, of getting Shell's Brewery to sponsor a $15,000 dollar Mod 100 races at the Water Carnival apprx. 25 yrs. ago, but after twiching in his seat and humming, Mr. Marty finally said no.

Anyway, I am curious what were the largest non-Mercury, or OMC outboards raced years back?
What were the inches cubed and HP ratings.

This is a wonderful site and I am amazed it took me this long to find it.

That's an interesting question. The largest race motor ever consistently raced was the 244 ci 4 liter OMC V-8. Probably 375hp.

The largest displacement non OMC non Merc motor ever raced was probably the Carniti inline 6. I think there was a 99ci version and probably about 200 hp, but there was no official rating and it did not run in the US.


The most powerful non OMC non Merc outboard raced in the US was probably the Konig 1000cc 8 cylinder racer. It may have been about 200 hp as well.

Of US made non OMC non Merc outboards the McCulloch 630 would top out at 63 ci and 88 hp.

Didn't Brian Daley run Yamaha's in MOD U back in the 80's. Those were 2 litre or highr moters, I think Ted Zahorski was involved with those.

What about the Chryslers? Granted one Chrysler cubic inch was worth about .8/cu.in of Merc or OMC, but they were bigger than the 630's. :D

You are correct. I knew there was something I was trying to remember last night and could not recall.

The Chrysler racers were 96 ci, the largest was 150hp.
