Hello All,

Does anyone know where I can find a solid upper motor mount for the 1989 Evinrude 200 XP?

I Googled it with no results.

Please advise.

Thanks!

Seems to me, when we ran these motors we made our own solid mounts by pinning the bottoms with a quarter inch rod and the top mounts we cut some aluminum and hammer it between the metal and the rubber....But I think I could honestly say, "Don't try this at home."

Call Al Stoker at John's Custom Marine....Al pretty much knows Evinrude V-6 motors.

Hello Ron,

Thanks for the heads up.

Solid mounts seem impossible to find!

The only thing available has been the rubber mount.

It came stock with a solid metal mount.

For some reason the bolt on the starbord side of the mount has broken twice since I added a re-worked prop from DAH a year ago.

Its a reworked Raker 14 x 26.

When I told them to rework it, I mentioned that it would not hold the water with the motor jacked all the way up (5 inches).

I would get the engine up about 4 inches and it wouldnt hold - bow would drop.

They added more cup o the trailing edge, sharpened the blades, and balanced it.

The DAH rework is good - as the prop keeps its bite while jacked up to 5 inches, but I keep breaking the steering bracket bolt that goes thru the upper motor mount.

I just want to weld the steering bracket to the spacer between the power head and midsection.

I cant afford the keep replacing the mount/bolt because the power head must come off and that is expensive.

Boat is a 1989 Baja 186 Sport.:D

do you have solid upper mount but rubber lowers?

Hello.

Im not sure.

Never had the lower mount covers off.

I think all the OMC GT and XP models come stock with solid upper and lower mounts.

Anyone out there got any other ideas (racing experience) on how to beef up the connection between the upper motor mount and the steering arm on the 1989 OMC XP and GT models?

Any comments are welcome.

I dont know the engine but I would doubt the engine came with solid mounts.
If it has a solid upper and rubber lowers that would explain why the upper is failing as it is handling all the steering torque.
Every other OMC race motor that I can think of with solid mounts came with wing bars to steer with

I will pull a cover on the lower mount and check to see whats there.

I dont have a wing style steering bar (single cable).

I have dual cable steering.

The XP would have originally come with stiff lower mounts. Same as the 300 hp 20" V8 and very stiff rubber but not solid. The upper mount was a normal V6 piece.

I don't believe soft upper mounts could cause a upper bolt to break. There must be something else going seriously wrong.

If you really want solid mounts, contact "jenksam" on screamandfly.com.

All,

Spoke with Al Stoker :D of Johns Custom Marine in CA yesterday.

He said that mount bolt shouldnt be breaking and to make sure the yoke surfaces are square.

Other serious problems:

Apparently, I might be running too much positve trim and that I need more set back.

I should also check for a straight bottom.

Al also said that the muont bolts for the E-Tech motors are tougher 17.4 high grade stainless steel bolts - I think Im gonna start with those and see what happens.

Additionally, if I need a sturdier mount, the 85-87 GT XP mounts are heavy duty.

I appreciate all the discussion.

Any other ideas out there?
