My completed 8' 3" monohull hydroplane. Still need to get deadman throttle, rig up steering, and put in low water pickup. First trial runs will be with the tiller, until I get everything rigged up. That is, if the Environmental Police ever get their a$$es over and give me a hull ID number.

Is this a Mini-Most??
Not quite, although it looks real similar. It is a Glen L design, an XP8.
Unfortunately not class legal for any APBA class (too small), in retrospect I wish I had known some of the racing class requirements before starting the build but I'm completely satisfied with how it came out nonetheless.

Hello ToneDef,
You obviously know how to build boats. You could always get plans or a kit for a currently raced design. There are many out there.
Good Luck,
Beautiful job! Looks great

Got her in the water this weekend, speeds are right around 30 MPH, a bit slower than I'd like, but around what I expected with the 8.5" pitch prop it's got on there now. Porpoising was a problem, until I put on this Doel Fin cavitation plate extension. I really gotta get my hands on a real prop, one of Ron Hills surface piercers so I can jack the engine all the way up and get her cruising!! I decided to scrap the teleflex idea because someone gave me a cable pulley helm, so all I need now are sheave boxes, motor pulleys, springs, and cable. Still looking for the best price on a deadman throttle too. Does Kellog sell them? I can get pretty deep discounts with them through work.

Thank you techteam!
Last night I ran the boat in a pond, made some adjustments to engine height, and ran the 102 octane race fuel. First tank was a 93/102 mix, probably 60% 93 40% 102, and she ran well, like normal. When I got down to tank about 1/3 full I filled it back up with 102, mixed at 40:1 with Torco synthetic premix oil. At this point it was pretty much straight race fuel.
When I ran it this time, it would idle fine and run fair in the midrange, but when I tried to run WOT, it would run for about 20 seconds and then die, as if fuel starved. The engine is stock except for carbon fiber reeds and the airbox being opened up more. Coincidence that the high speed circuit in the carb got clogged at the same time as I ran the race gas??
NGK recommended I run BR7ES plugs for a more complete combustion of the race fuel, but I have not found any yet so I am still running stock plugs. I would not think incomplete combustion would cause the engine to die like that, although if I am possibly flooding it then I could understand. It is also difficult to start right after it dies, mimicking a flooded engine.
At this point the only plausible situation seems to me that the engine is not burning all the fuel in the combustion chambers, flooding it.
Ran into the same situation with a Suzuki. Ran great with pump gas but went to 104 av-gas and it would drop dead shortly after top end. Turned out to be water in the fuel. Covered the excellerator jets and fell on it's face. Got the water cleaned out and it was a rocket.

Water in the fuel possible yes, however it was a brand new 5 gallon can I just opened yesterday. Water getting in the float bowl however, I can see because I have that (practically) wide open vent on the front of my cowling (can kind of make it out in a few of the pics), but then wouldn't my pump gas be getting wet too? Tonight I am going to drain the bowl and run it off a different tank with the same 102 fuel, and most likely pull the carb to clean it once more/return to stock settings.

Returning the carburetor to stock settings got rid of the starvation @ WOT, however it seems to be under-revving now by just a hair. I have yet to try hotter plugs, however, and more carb adjustments must be made.

We can't hear the motor with the music.
Borrow a GPS & a rev counter.
We need to see both instruments at full on & hear the motor, which looks like it's got to come up a bit, run a bit of clear plastic pipe from the tell tale to where you can see easy & not get a shower.
so we need revs & speed , at existing height.
lift the motor in 1/2 inch steps until you loose the tell tale flow or the prop start slipping
record speed & revs every step
try bringing the motor in 1 hole.

I have only a digital camera with poor video capabilities, it does not record sound. but i will do my best to get my hands on a sound capable camcorder, and a tiny tach.

Another consideration. Back in the day we had customers that would have this problem when running their fuel tanks in the front of their aluminum fishing boats. We found that the small OMC fuel pumps on the fishing engines could not draw the fuel from that long a distance at W.O.T. without starving for fuel when the tanks got lower on fuel. OMC came out with a bulliten with a fix. I believe they offered a different fuel pump kit. Just a thought.
