What type of break in procedures do you guys use for your motors?

I've read a million different versions but most are aimed at the v-6's, some range from 2 hrs to 10 hours at various rpm operation ranges. Any thing different for the smaller two and three cylinder motors, SST 45, SST60, stingers etc.

rebuilt plenty
had them at wot on the test wheel after 15 minutes of fast idle
BUT not held at WOT for too long

You should see what they do with a new engine on the production line

I recall a 25ssh race at Witcomb Bayou near Tarpon Springs Fla around 1976. The week end before I had reringed, installed lower crank bearing and seals + new reeds and setting the cage on my Merc 25ss. I had no time to test before due to work so at the race I just beach started it to make sure it ran then the 5 minute gun and I was off. I had about 4 minutes to run the engine thru various rpms and then the the clock at zero and off at 7000 rpm. The engine got better as the race proceeded, even better in the second heat and the finals (back then there were about 35 boats in the 25ssh class that showed up) so racing the engine broke it in.

I suggest 5 minutes in the tank then on the boat and easy plane over and varoius rpm ranges for about 15 min then let it rip for short bursts at full rpm.

Add extra oil during this time then go back to what ever oil mix you use.
I like more oil than less even after the run in. .

Back then was using non synthetic TCW III

This is how I break sst45 motors in & I have never burnt one up breaking it in.
We get good a good ring seat with this procedure & I generally take them out & race them after this break in procedure. I have never had an issue with seizing a motor.

Non synthetic oil to break it in. If you use synthetic the rings will not seat.
The motor needs to be under a load. The test wheel is usually not enough to make the motor get warm. Use an old prop & take the boat out on the water and run it.
10 min. on trailer or at about 1500 rpm. Keep it running and make sure it is not getting to hot.
(Use an old prop while putting it under a load on the trailer)
After each interval slow the rpm down to the previous rpm and let the motor cool a bit.
Like this.
5 min. at 3000 rpm (on plane)
5 min. at 2500
5 min. at 3500
5 min. at 3000
5 min. at 4000
5 min. at 3500
5 min. at 4500
5 min. at 4000
Wind it up to full throttle for a few laps and then let it cool back down.
