I remember a thread here (maybe by Lars Strom??) on care and feeding of these lowers, but cant find it.
Well Monday I was able to find a gearcase # 608RH that was seized up and got it for a song. :D
Outside appearances / splines show virtually no wear. With the application of slight force and some oil I was able to turn it, now it looks emiently salvageable. However there are slight watermarks on the 2 top Timkens revealed by removal of the upper gearcase head.
Sooo does anyone have a parts list for this gearcase so I can source the bearings therein? As I recall it is similar in construction internally to the SSM shown for the SST120 in MIDAS.
Any tricks I should know B4 I mess it up??

The repair is very simple, put it in a box and send it to Chris Fairchild, he stocks all the parts for them and rebuilds them in his sleep, sometimes literally.......

Thanks Bill, appreciate the info. Here are a couple pics. It looks like this thing may be in decent shape. I just want to fix it up enough for a possible recreational run someday and have it around to look at. I'll call Chris tho and see what the tariff might be. Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor!!

Well thge thing is if it is savable, and you redo it yourself incorrectly, which is easy, then it will be quickly worthless, but if you need the bearings and seals I have them all here

Called Chris, sounds reasonable. Yeah, I'd hate to ruin this thing.
"Do what you do do well, leave the rest to the other doers"
Would it be reasonable to cut the driveshaft off and use a coupler for different applications? I measured the shaft; 18" from face of gearcase so its for a 15" shortshaft?

I doubt you would find "other" suitable applications
15" short FGS is the normal application. Hard to find a "long" boat that would benefit from an inline 6 SSM

It's a shortshaft boat. I posted a pic at Johns site.
The entire inside was gutted and rebuilt with Meranti and spruce, the bottom is STRAIGHT.

Can't find it anymore. Was it before the upgrade?
Are you sure its a 70 mph+ boat with the power you have? If it won't run 70+ with a standard foot, a Speedmaster will be nothing but trouble.
