I am looking for a cylinder head temperature gauge. I have a 3 cyl Johnson that has a tapped hole near the top spark plug that looks to be 3/8" fine thread.
I know very little about the electrical operation of the sending unit. I have found all sorts of water temperature gauges. Can these be used in a cylinder head application? If not, where should I be looking for the gauge I need?

Does the tapped hole go into the coolant chamber? If so it might be a for coolant temp gage sensor.
Most cylinder head temp gages use a sensor lead that goes under the spark plug so no need for the tapped hole you note butr a battery is needed.

I mean this with the upmost sensarity. Forget the temp gauge and or a water pressure guage. They only give you something else to worry about. It is my OPINION (mine) that they are a waste of time and effort. Tune the engine, get the set up right and the rest will take care of it self.
Look at this picture, this is 78mph, 7500 rpm, NO TEMP OR PRESSURE guages, save that money for where you need it

zul8tr,
Here is the picture showing the location of the hole. It is does not have anything threaded into it on my factory motor.

After a little more research, it looks like the hole I circled is for use with a standard outboard water temp gauge. Does that sound right?
workcar,
I appreciate your advice, but I have already blown one motor that gave no indication it was about to go, so I would consider water pressure and temp gauges cheap insurance against something similar in the future.

Run a small hose from engine to your seating area.
Mount an direct open end of hose to spray water outside of boat.:)
That 56 will have acess for this hose in water jacket or top of block.
