Is it better to leave the thermostat or to remove it if running motor high on transom and turning between 6500 to 7000 rpms?

120 degrees is to avoid salt buildup. prime temperature is hotter 180+

A cold engine will wear it self out.

actually i cannot remember which one it was. this was back in the lat 80s. i do remember opening a few boxes at the auto store to find one that matched the diameter and depth for the 49ci omc.

All I know is that the fishermen here that pull the stats wear a motor out way faster than those that don't. A motor has to be at temp to make power. I run 1 1/2" above the bottom, with a factory stat.

Running at low speed, as the fishermen tend to do with all that trolling, keeps the motor too cold. That damages the pistons/ rings/ walls/ etc. Hard running keeps her warm enough to avoid that.
