as i'm turning my otherwise stock 6E9(C40) twin yamaha/mariner at 6500 rpm i realised that i need to run some fibre reeds as the stock ones wouldn't last long, with that in mind i'm ordering a set from chris carson, do i need to do anything else to get the most out of them? up a size on the jets? open up the cages?

stock reeds should be fine at that rpm, but for longevity glassfibre reeds are safer, generally the carb will lean out slightly, but it is probably to rich to begin with, you can try the next main jet up if you like, but don't expect any miracle gains.

i thought running glass reeds you only had to richen up the idle,to avoid the lean cough they get.

without engine mods i doubt it, but every engine is different. Just try it and see, i doubt it would require much carb jetting at all. It is just changing the reed valve material, why don't you ask Chris Carson, he has got to know wether carb rejetting is required

i remember years ago when i tried some boysen reeds ,they said you had to richen up the idle mix so the motor wouldn't cough at idle because it could cause the reeds to chip.they said nothing about a main jet change?
chris's reeds are totally different to the boysen ones i had .i don't think he mentioned nothing about a main jet change either.
i just thought it was common knowledge to fatten it up a bit at idle with fibre reeds.i may be wrong though.

got a very fast reply!

No use the stock hardware when installing them and use the stock jetting too.. If you like you or I can open the cages up it's your call..

now thats what i call customer service!!

ok so the chris carson reeds are fitted and trialled..... no lean sneeze and after a plug chop all appears well at WOT, seems a little punchier in the mid range, no increase in max revs but a 1.1mph increase in speed:D its now doing 47.1mph!!
