Mercury didn't like it, OMC didn't like it. So, it disappeared.

I think the Mod Vp class was the best OPC class of all time. When they raced at Bay City the crowd was on their feet for the entire final. They put on a heck of a show.I could watch them race all day.

And you would think Mercury and OMC would have taken notice of this.

OMC was busy spending money on V-6 and V-8 racing. Maybe, with the right sponsors, their dream could have come to fruition. OMC was a funny company. I was run from the Top down, and you'd better not get out of lock step. Few realize that every V-8 OMC was owned by OMC. They wanted an OMC to win, but OMC wanted to say "WHO" would win with an OMC.

OMC realized early in the MOD VP days that they coudl not compete with Mercury High Performance. Why, well, Mercury was a bunch of hungry young "KIDS" willing to work hard to win and sell product.

Mercury didn't want just tunnel racing that the could control they wanted 25 SS, D Hydro, Mod VP, MOD 50, Champ boat and Offshore Racing to grow, so it would be a profit center for Mercury Marine.

Mercury built their MOD VP motor and sold it to the general public. OMC had no real desire to get into selling MOD VP motors as they saw their bread and butter and mom and pop motors. But OMC didn't want to see Mercury dominate MOD VP Racing.

Now, back tracking a little, Jim Jost saw MOD VP as a way to sell Eviinrude motors. One year, about 1982, there were 25 plus Mod VP boats at Havasu and 24 of them were Evinrudes that Jim Jost had loaned or sold and very reduced rates. There was one Mercury there, and that was Luis Collins. Now Luis says he built that motor, but Fred Hausenstien had a hand in it no matter how it is sliced.

That lone Mercury just about ruined the day for the OMC clan had it not been for a missed bouy and no communication with Louis to let him know about it.

Another Mod VP video --- Baltimore, MD 1988 and Sacramento 1988. I loved watching the races in Sacramento -- especially sitting on top of that 50 foot wall looking over the whole race course. Doubt that would be allowed today!
