I just picked up a evinruide 75 hp short shaft today with the small gear case unit and have a serial number and barely could read model number. I think the motor is a 1975 but can someone help me confirm this?

Serial # 10001046

Model # 75542 B

Just for the record this motor is NOT FOR SALE I'm gonna build it. So probably be asking a ton of questions here about it.

I hope I can still buy a owners/service manual for it and what tiller handle will fit this motor??
I was told that a 50 omc would fit it is this true??

Will upload some pics of it here shortly.

Thanks
Chris

Anyone have pictures of what a 56 ci motor looks like??

1.] sst60 lost foam block with aluminum head and webbing on exhaust side
2.] 88 permanent cast block with black head and no exhaust webbing

1.] sst60 sandcast block with aluminum head
2.] 88 lost foam block with black head

The part that really stands out and it is what someone else told me which is the left/port side of the engine looking when standing behind the motor I think it is called the exhaust plate there is a quarter inch plate then a thick block which is all connect to the engine block itself. I take it this is the main thing for identifying the different blocks?
My 49ci actually has three individual plates bolted to the block.

The fly wheel and Linkage can it be used on the 56 motor? I was told by someone else that the crank from the 49 can be used on the 56 is this true as well?? I'm not sure these spark plug coil packs I have are any good but can they be used on the 56 as well as the fuel pump?

I had heard from another person that from 85-86 is the years of the 56 but then someone last night told me the years were 85-89 for the 56 ci is this true as well? not saying he is a liar but just want someone else to confirm this as well.

Just realized you have a tiller what year and make is it from??

Thanks for the photos

This info is reversed. The block with the painted head is a permanent cast and the one with the unpainted head is lost foam cast.

The first year for the 56 was 1986 and it was permanent cast. Supposedly 86 and 87 were the only two years that were permanent cast but I've run across some 88 that were permanent cast. The crankshaft from the 49 will work in the 56, however prior to 83 the cranks were cast and subject to breaking. 89 was when the crankshaft changed from 4 spline to a fine spline. 93 was when the blocks went from bridgeport to oval port.

the flywheel, linkage, coils and fuel pump are interchangeable. another way to tell is the cylinder head is one piece on the 56ci. the tiller is an OMC tiller, not sure what year. I made an adaptor as the hole pattern in the short shaft steering tongue vs the longshaft steering tongue are different.

Thanks guys I paid Glenn Hopkins a visit at Lunch time and drilled him for some information.

Can you take a close up picture of your tiller and how it's mounted? and the stabilizer/shock absorber can I see a close up picture of the bracket that hooks to the motor??

Gonna go see a place this weekend to see if they have a 56 ci motor and if I can get this well I'll be tapped out for a while then.

Thanks

- tiller mounted with three hole metal strip
- torque & damper brackets made with 6061-T6 aircraft aluminum mounted to wing plate bolts on sst60 adapter or powerhead bolts on std 56ci exhaust adapter.

With the lost foam block what features am I looking at that are different from other 56 ci motors?

If building a performance motor, you want the permanent cast rather than the lost foam.

Whats the difference?

The permanent cast doesn't have glue lines to restrict and disturb flow. It also has higher crankcase pressure.

Visually though how can I tell the difference? or is there a serial number that will tell me the difference? what serial numbers tell me the lost foam and cast blocks?

The rear of the block has webbing between outer head bolt hole and exhaust side on the lost foam. The permanent cast does not have it. Look at the pictures that were posted earlier in this thread.

Hard to see it but the last two pictures looks like they were foam because you can see the little circles that look like there raised on the exhaust side, correct? while the first picture like you said there is a web or looks like a gusset coming off the studs for the head and the rest of the exhaust is smooth correct?

when did they stop making the blocks pictured above, the smooth ones ?

I ask this as i have a 1995 3 cylinder 60-70hp block that has webbing,
infact ive got 2 blocks identical.

or are these completely different engine blocks to mine ?

i was just going by the cubic inch thing

ahh
no data for the 1995 models

i take it this is a complete new engine altogether then.

no stayed the same till 98 then it was a 65 till 99 then disappeared and only a commercial engine in various countrys after that

well all this seems very strange.

evinrude in their sales brochures say that the new engine for 95 has the bigger 920cc block !!!!!

yet it seems that this engine block has been around a while before hand....

and what makes the higher crankcase pressure ?

This all could have been a sales pitch to sell more maybe.

if you look up some things like the ngk spark plug website that even says the 56 wasnt around untill the 90's.

maybe it was just some countries that didnt get the bigger cc engines till later.

the 3 cylinder 60 in the uk from 89 wasnt 56ci it was 49ci

look at this chart from boat setup.com.

the same spark plugs were used in both
Be carefull with a new engine story, if a horsepower change means the engine changed then they would be right in saying this year the 60hp has a new biggger engine as it was last years 70 (derated)

phillnjack
07-05-2012, 12:15 PM
Oh i know enough about what was derated to give bigger hp etc.
but in 1995 the 3cyl came in 50hp - 60hp - 70hp, all 56ci engines.
.
sale gimmicks include

"this years 60hp is the most powerfull 60hp on the market"

if an engine is 60hp then its 60hp....might have more torque low down etc ,but its still 60hp.

and whats with the 75hp ? is that flywheel rated ?

phill

Powerabout
07-05-2012, 04:22 PM
yes

phillnjack
07-06-2012, 02:19 AM
So a 75hp is probably just a 65hp or 70hp at the prop.....

why do they not just stick to one set of measurments,

are all engines since around 1990 now measured at the prop for hp ?

and by changing my 60hp to 70hp carbs from around same time would it realy give an extra 10hp for such a small difference?

and would it use an extra 10% + of juice to go with the extra hp ?????

Thanks, The tiller to the far left can you tell me how long the tiller are is?? I seen one for sale but it looks much shorter. If I knew the measurements of yours and if there the same as this other one well I may have to pick it up.
