</td> </tr> <tr align="left" valign="middle"> <td colspan="3" align="left">The following was prepared by Jan Slough (wife) and has been submitted to the San Diego UT </td> </tr> <tr align="left" valign="top"> <td colspan="3" align="left"> Charles was born in Worthington, Indiana, on November 13, 1923 to Adam and Ella “Hullett” Slough, the youngest of six children. After high school he joined the Marines served during World War II and was Honorably discharged at Miramar, San Diego, California April 18th 1946. From the Marine’s he went into Cosmetology becoming a member of the Long Beach Hair Styling Guild and began winning (across the United States) awards and contests through the years often placing First. He set up a chain of salons “Charles Hairstyling Salon’s and Beauty schools in San Diego. He helped many in getting a start in the business of hairstyling. He was often profiled in the Union Tribune for excellence in hairstyling, shooting, boating and bowling.
As a member of the Pacific Power Boat Club, after a friend sold him a boat, he went on to win 40 cups in outboard competition and held the record in D-stocks for the Colorado River Marathon from Needles to Parker Dam and back to Needles setting the record with a time 1 hour and 52 minutes.
He was an avid bird hunter he had embarked on a new sport of live bird shoots which demanded ultimate concentration and skill. He once went 36 straight with the world record at the time being 41. He attended shoots in Mexico, Texas and California. He almost never missed the opening day Dove season. Later shooting only Clay birds and teaching his wife to shoot, was often out at San Diego Shotgun Sports shooting range.
Later in life he joined the Pacific Southwest Wildlife Arts carving Ducks and quail again winning Novice to Expert awards. His biggest award was for carving a full size” Mallard in Flight” which when sold paid for a trip of a lifetime to Argentina hunting pigeons, ducks and geese.
Charles will be greatly missed by his wife, Jan and one daughter Trudy of Florida, two sons, Greg of Palm Desert , Adam of Missouri, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
No services are planned. A Memorial Shoot at Redlands shooting Park is in work.
