I grew up in Bellfower, in the middle of cow fields....We called it SMELLFLOWER in the winter when it rained... There was a street called Bixby Avenue where I'd hang out near the railroad tracks trying to find flares, discarded from trains, usually, we didn't find any...
There was a "RICH" section of Long Beach called Bixby Noels (Spelled wrong)...Anyway, when I got older my dad told me that the Bixby Family had owned a lot of land in LOng Beach and Bellflower and that was where the name came from...He also told me Long Beach Marine Stadium was built for the 1932 Olympics and that the Bixby Family had donated the land...
All that seemed fine and good... until I met Rex Bixby...THE BIXBY FAMILY, REX...
Seems when they donated the land to Long Beach, there was a clause that they could have it as long as they also allowed boat racing, when the city was trying to cut out.
Rex "SAVED Long Beach by bring out some old documents...
Anyway, Rex wrote this book to promote Boat racing...
Here is part of the letter he set out in 1966..
