Okay, I know they made a variety of these motors. Which one was the "badass" one that had the boost ports in the pistons? That made them a true 150 right? I am asking because a relative of mine called today and said they had a 1500 in line 6 merc they would give me if I drove up to get it. They are on up in age and do not have a camera phone. If its one of the good ones ill make the trip !

How can I tell or what do I need to ask him to tell me?

PS. The serial number he says he cannot find, I guess its wore off.

Many of them had the boost ports--140 hp up at least. That 150 is a solid runner.

The most powerful inline six merc was the 1500XS package as opposed to the regular 1500. This was a 155 hp instead of 150. It was a special performance model. That's all I know as I prefer big motors as late models with warranty for me. The antique/classics are fun when they are light to carry so I can just switch em out when they crap out. But "FREE" makes up for that never the less....GO GET THAT MERC !!

...."1500XS package "

I think that was the J-model. Strong runners, but the real butt kickers were the Twisters with their six carbs and external reeds. Good for about 180 to 200 hp (depending on who you ask).

Free don't even evaluate it, at worse there are may parts that can help get other engines on the water. How far do you have to drive that may make you rethink since free is not the case?

its only 6 hours, so I will definitely be making the trip next week!

I have a 15 inch mid that will work.. I can take 5" out of the drive shaft.. bobs nose cone/lwp.. Maybe put it on my little 16 ft Baha :cool:
