I am looking for a service manual for a super speedmaster (http://www.boatracingfacts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2632), anyone got one, or know were I can find one ?? :)

I am not picky, can take a scan, photocopy, handwritten document, pdf, picture, anything that can be read .

Might even be interested in paying for one:)

No luck so far :( , still looking .

But I have found a manual for the Mercruiser SSM II/III/IV/V, not the same unit I know but it's a close relative ....

Think I have figured to how to adjust my ssm, but I need some input and data.

Gear lash...... how much, any ideas, 0.012" > 0.016" ?? ( from the SSM II )
Same gear lash on bout drive shafts ??, the Mercruiser unit calls for + 0.005" > 0.002" on the front drive shaft .

http://forum.hem-mekk.net/bilder/manual/gear.jpg
Were to measure the gear lash ?? ( distance from the center of the drive shaft ), center of the teeth ??

The Mercruiser manual also calls for the use of average backlash readings (http://forum.hem-mekk.net/bilder/manual/backlach.jpg), time consuming ... but I got the time ...

How to adjust the proppshaft ??, it got a shim in the back, but how about the front, just turn the nut until it feels tight ?? ( nut = ref# 78 in the parts manual (http://forum.hem-mekk.net/manuals/ssm_parts.pdf))

Still working on the shimming process on the upper bearing clearance, and the spur gears.....

If you can't find a manual yourself, write one ;)

on the pinion gear, run it to the big side of the clearance, this will let oil in between, keepin it cool, and together, you got to lockup the prop shaft to check the back lash, thinkin thats got only one pinion gear.

No, Fred ... the Super Speedmaster Droll is talking about has 2 of everything

Not sure your advice has anything to do with this particular lower unit if you think it has only one pinion

even if it had 10 pinions, too tight heats up and burns, can't see how your guna mesure back lash with out lockinup the prop shaft. unless you got the Feel,

I am gonna lock the prop shaft, hard to measure else :) , and measure each driveshaft individually ( without the spur gears installed ).

My problem is to find the correct # for the back lash, the numbers in my previous post was from the MC SSM II ( Mercruiser SSM )

Anyone know where I should measure the back lash ??( distance from center of the drive shaft).

I have assembled the ssm ( not finally, just to get the feel ),it still got way to much back lash, but it does turn smooth :) .

the ones i've done, backlash mesurein is done with a tab on a hose clamp, that slides down on the main driveshaft, has a spot to hit with the dial-inda-cater ,
it's a tool, how is thay setin up the ones in the book ya got?

never did a merc like yours.

Same tool design for the Mercury too, my manual calls for the tool #91-53459.
But since the manual I got is for the bigger cousin, I am guessing I need another tool, or at least I need to know where to put my dial indicator ( distance from shaft ), the diameter of my gears are 1.8" :) .

How does this sound :)

Gear lash = 0.014" on the rear drive shaft
Gear lash = 0.010" on the front drive shaft

All gear lash is measured 0.810" from the center of the drive shafts ( tool #91-78473 ?? ).

Retainer nut should be tighten until ALL propeller shaft end-play is eliminated.
Continue to tighten until propeller shaft requires 3 lbs force to rotate .
