hi

i put a post up a week ago and a lot of friendly people have returned interesting answers to my questions, so thank you to all the boat racers out there, but i have 1 last question, i was looking for some super strangler v4 information, but i have 1 final question just to make sure i will be ok at high rpm's. on my lightweight flywheel it has 22deg marked on it for timing, but was this timing for the super stranglers with there pistons turned around?. my crossflow pistons are facing the normal way and the timing is stock 28deg. because my motor has alot of porting and racing parts put into the engine i would like to know what timing i will set the engine to?

whenever a motor is high ported,,,,,or rpms are than higher than the factory
recommends the timing needs to be backed off,,,,so not to detonate the piston tops,,,,
factory timing is for factory ports,compression,rpm
factory settings go out the window as well as factory jets,ect

as bill stated (and he knows these motors well) 22 and racing fuel
you now have a motor with major flow and higher compression
backing off the timing will increase the rpm,,,,
and racing fuel will help cool the combustion and reduce detonation

when you cut these crossflows heads the plug gets real close to piston top
also need to stay with surface gap racing plugs
and if go with electrode plug,,,better use indexing washers to pull plug back
and run #9 heat range instead of 8,,,,,agaian not to burn piston top

the bottom end will loose power,,,so you will find where it likes to run
and keep it there,,,,,you have to jet and set timing for wide open throttle
as stated before its a race motor now,,,,,,and at all times,,,,,

i'm using flat top plugs (champion ul77v) are these ok? if not where can i find the best flat top plug for it? be cause my jets are 32's how much bigger will i have to go? the commpression on the engine is around 140-150 and it is not even started yet? how much higher will it go?

We ran 73c to 76c main jets in our V4s .Jets are in float bowl sides need omc speacial jet remover tool to change jets .We ran 185 psi compression with 24 degrees timing.We ran champion gold paladium tip spark plugs gapped at.024.

with those jets and compression was it hard to start and was the starter moter strugling to crank the beast over?

when i done my compresion test on my strangler yesterday, my starter motor was stugling to turn 1 cylinder over with 2 batteries. and all the plugs where out. the starter motor started smoking lol. (might have to get a new one)

and where can i find those type of plugs?

Need a good starter for sure battery cables should be in good shape and size.Some engines had wrong battery cables 6 gauge came on smaller engines.Should have 4 gauge or bigger wire and solder on cable ends.I don't think champion makes the L2g,L3g plugs any longer but Bosch and some others make a gold tip plug and platinum series.Ted May got me to use them gave me some to try.The higher the compression the more cranking rpm needed to make a good spark for starting. Early power pack engines had weak flywheel magnets trigger sensors had to have a close air gap.

but it will be ok to use the ul77v for now or should i get something else?

UL77V plugs are cold running at low speed.If you can get the RPM out of the engine with those plugs good or try something else.
