Jack Leek Interview

Seattle Outboard Association Life Member and APBA Honor squadron member Jack Leek passed away March 8 of a heart attack. Jack's racing career began in 1941 in outboards and extended, from the cast-iron era through Formula-1 as well as work in other categories up to Unlimited. Jack's technical skills brought him success in several alky classes, using motors Jack modified in his shop and led to involvement in the development of super high performance outboard motors. Jack played a vital part in founding Northwest racing organizations, and Jack additionally served as an APBA representative to UIM, as well as on numerous technical committees and racing commissions.

Reading this interview, I almost had a stroke!!! Do you know who the motor inspector was, at the 1952 Oakland Nationals??? (Where Jack Leek got DQ'd for an illegal gearcase).....

It was my DAD!!! My dad was offered a part of the Mercury distributorship when Elgin Gates came to California. But my dad become a DEALER instead, and was a Mercury Dealer until his death...and never had a RETAIL SHOP...

But, when Elgin came to California, my dad got a brand new "A-B" Quickie and a "D" Quickie and made a template for the gearcase contour gauge...My dad disqualified many using those gauges.....

I never knew Jaqck got DQ'd at the Oakland Nationals, 1952.
