Some racing from the other side of the pond for you guys to enjoy:-

It takes a while to get going (3m 54s to be precise) but the video contains several minutes footage of the 1993 World 0-350 from Chodzież, Poland.

You'll see that the camera is concentrated on boat #71 - not only was he the local Polish hero in hydro racing, but back in the day, he was the guy to beat.......Waldemar Marszalek!

Upon checking, Waldemar was both World & European champion in 0-350 that year. A few years back, Mike Ward looked back over the record books to determine who the most successful hydro driver was in UIM history (World, European Championships, etc) and the answer.........Waldemar. Marszalek. It's an accolade he stilll holds and to be honest with you, I don't see it ever being surpassed. In the 90s there wasn't a year go by without him winning something or other in the lower cc classs, 0-250 and 0-350

He used to race #11, but on this occasion he raced #71 as possibly another racer had the same #11 as Waldemar. But the give away is the distinctive red and white Malboro paint job - his boats were always painted in this way. So, if you are looking at any European photos from the 80s and 90s and see a red and white boat #11, it's more than likely Waldemar Marszalek

Interestingly, the guy who built his boats, Klotz (sp) of Poland (no relation to the oil people) ONLy built boats for Waldemar. Needless to say when he got a new boat, people were fighting over his old boat, although it was only really the Italians that got close to him with their Italian Mostes and Popoli boats. The guy in 2nd spot on the podium was an Italian, Carlo Menta.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the link. It's nice to see familiar faces.

We have a funny story about the number #11. In 1984, as we were getting ready to go to Nottingham, we had a new boat to race there. For us, the race before were the APBA championships at Acworth. We quickly made numbers, what's easier than two strips of duct tape for #11?

When we registered at Notts, seemes some Polish guy who was the current world champ had a gripe about us using #11, that was his number:) No problem, two more pieces of duct tape and #11 became #41. History!

After that first meeting, the Pugh/Marscalek(sp) combo was common.

So Eric, are you going to translate this Polish into English for us?? :D Seriously if anyone wants it translated, I am sure that I can find a friend to do it for us. You know that you have arrived when you have your own 'entry; in Wikipedia - like I said, back in the day he was a National sporting hero in Poland and the former Eastern Bloc
