The video is about 45 minutes, some from both days. Does not have the very beginning of the race because Backfire was scoring for one of the Wings that dropped out. When it dropped out, he picked up the camera and shot the film he recently converted to video/DVD

I don't know who this is or what kind of boat it is. Maybe someone can tell us. One of many triple engine rigs
to run at Havasu in '69 ... this was the only one to consistently run in the
top 10 both days. Looks like it might even be a V bottom.

I don't think the Sport J class had been invented yet. I think what became Sport J was just called S at that time ... Single

... I think the Wings ran in Twin, Unlimited or Experimental, depending on what engines they had.

Sport J has been around since the mid 60's in APBA. As a matter of fact there were "S" (Sports) classes for all the classes from E through JJ. However Havasu was a special event and not an OPC event back then. so there was simply a single outboard class.

The first "J" engine was the Merc 1100. It was introduce in either '66 or '67??? It was legal in SJ and JP. I ran JP in '67. S Class was Unlimited Single Engine.

The race was four hours, one day, one stop for fuel.

Grandpa Seebold won the calcutta with Sherlock's first place.

Hello all, I have lived in Lake Havasu since 1964 and found this site looking for old race footage. My dad worked for Bob McCulloch Jr. on the land development side for many years and helped witht the race set up a couple of times. His 70th birthday is coming up and I went looking for what I thought were old Wide World of Sports films to try to get as a gift. Did they not cover it one year when Pepsi (I still have Bob Jr's Pepsi jacket) came on as a sponsor? Anyway found your wonderful site and then the video from Backfire. I have PM directly to Backfire for info, but was wondering if anyone knew of other film out there...Thanks for any help....

PS I saw you might be looking for more old photos, I know my family has many from those race days.

WE at BRF always love Boat Racing pictures....bring them out of boxes, drawers and off walls and post them.

In '69, Dave Severson was working with Wide World of Sports and they shot quite a bit of footage...Then they installed a camera between my pickle forks (On the boat in my avatar) to try to take some footage of me driving. They started a camera rolling and I made a short lap...They liked what they saw, and said make a fast run....Well when I made the backward turn (On the boomerang course) at the point, I hooked it a little and the camera flew off my boat like a "CORK out of a Pop Gun"....Camera made a big ker splash....

When I returned to the pits, the camera crew seemed a little "SHOCKED" at the loss of their $5,000 camera........ and so was a lot of their footage...

Seems, when Wide World of Sport came out, right after Havasu, there was maybe 15 seconds of TV time with me in my Hallett....But the race was never really covered on Wide World of Sports... I tell people...if they ask or not, that I was on Wide World of Sports....which I was, for maybe 15 seconds..

Lake Spinney..Georgia..or somewhere, Wide World of Sport did cover an NOA World Championship for PRO Outboards..

Add:

Wide World of Sports, at different times had Havasu and the NOA clips at the start of Wide World of Sports....But real air time wasn't MUCH!
