View Full Version : two barrels

has anyone out there run two barrels on a 45 inch omc twin. I have a set of 1-1/16" bore carbs setting on the bench. A two piece manifold doesnt look that hard to build!! Or is it too much?

a guy in georgia is running the 1 inch ones on a hydro. seems to work good

You definitely want the 1" bores, waisting your time with the others.

I saw another set today. I do not know if they do much without other mods.

FEH/850/SEH on the 45, 2 bbls helped out with acceleration, once up and running.......

The 1" venturi 2bbls will light up a stock 45 for acceleration.

The intake plate isnt difficult to make if you can transfer holes from an intake gasket and 2 bbl gaskets. no mater how crude it will wake up a 45ss.

Geometry gets complicated when making improvements with transition into the front. Since I am not a tool and die maker I had to measure a 45 front half on CNC Bridgeport w/digital readout and probe tip, then took coordinates over to Auto Cad and made a dwg to machine with tapered and radiused end mills to smooth out transition effective areas.

Am in the process of making some intakes and air horns if interested
let me know

Yeah, Sonny told me about the concept. Application looks good.

I have been around these engines for some time. I never have raced a twin. No sense in it when it is cheaper to build and go faster in a triple.

At any rate, I have seen more than a handfull of folks try these two barrel carbs. Each and every one of them had problems. It was a constant battle. I have seen them run and run well, but like I said, it is a contant battle.

This is just my opinion.

Thanks, guys. This looks great. The progressive linkage looks great. I too will consider this. I love to work on the mill. Any ideas about jetting. Shut down the idle circuit on the secondaries? I suppose you could just jet to idle on both.

Mark75H

I understand the concept and the application seems proficient, but to what end? Will the secondary barrels be jetted differently?

W.O.T.main jets will be the same, low speed transition jet will be tweaked to help with punch.........................

I use this concept with the mercury laser injection. I have used the brucato SVS system and also used OMC looper throttle plates. The secondaries only operate from 3/4 throttle up. It is a real kick in the but when the secondaries open. I have done a couple of laser motors that can't be caught by a conventional 260 motor.

or you could have even bigger secondarys like these

I have roughed a few extra's if anyone is running under the stock cowl.
Good for one jet size increase. They are only 1/2" tall for use under the stock cowl.

One more machine shop session and will be ready to ship!

Can Also make these for tuned length at rpms, good for two jet size increase.

Nice looking carbs, 3 jet version and idle circuit only in one barrel!!!!
I thought it might be cooler to put the cross shaft higher or lower in the casting seeing as someone went to all that trouble to cast them?

Is that 300 for 3 with manifold for a 3 cyl?
I'm saving up and will need a straight in front for a 56 er

Ive seen it done to an OMC 22ci with 2 Tillotsens, it did OK as a 1st run but thats the only time I saw it. 2 of the 35hp OMC carbs [w/o the electric choke brackets] could be lined up & coupled at the throttle axles fairly easily as a side by side. Then of course the I-manifold would need work. Id guess you would have to put a plate in to separate the manifold since as a 1 carb-er its open to both reed sets. Ive been tempted to try it for some time but these would likely be too much for my 31.8 twins.

I have one of these motors 'under the bench' and have been thinking of playing with it. Mine is an earlier 50 hp 45 twin (I measured it) without finger ports that I believe the later motors have.

The plan is to mount it on a Mark 55 tower and couple it with a drive shaft adapter. (My dink boat, where I run all kinds of homemade contraptions, must have a full gearshift LU since it's used as a dingy.) Plus, I have cornered the world on 11 spline Mark 55 props!

Question: Does anyone out there have photos of the later motor's bore so I can see what I have? Also, a few parts are missing off my powerhead, like the lower crank seal plate (same as the triple's) and the entire throttle linkage. If anyone has these parts laying about and wants to part with them, please let me know.

Thanks,

Jeff (Lifetime Merc guy)

To my best knowledge, none of this series engines had fingerports. The 40/48/50/60 blocks were basically the same except for the later ones w/ the exhaust relief hole ( which you don't wont)
There is quite a few folks on this site that have very very good knowledge of the workings of these engines, and also can provide you w/ parts / information on mods that will really wake up these engines.

It all depends if you are going to race stock, or want to play hard.

A pair of 2 bls will wake this baby up.

Thanks! I am in the "play hard" group, but I love building weirdo motors for my little boat--it makes the winter months past easier.

I would greatly appreciate any and all info on making these 45 cube OMC twins go!

Here's a few of my present project motors:

1. A 30 cube (Merc 350 twin) with homemade external reeds.

2. A 65 hp triple adapted to my favorite, Mark 55 tower, and

3. My 'regular' motor, an offset plugs 44 with a custom hood.

I suspect that boat was running 100 mph at this race. He timed the start to meet the 70-75 mph C class boats at the starting clock and passed them like they were literally standing still. By the end of the race he had lapped the entire field and was looking at the roostertails of the stragglers the second time. If it had been a 4 lap race ... he probably would have passed half the field again.
