I recently received a collection of Steve Litzell's paper collection via Mike Thirlby. Included in his paper was 30 or 40 editions of this newsletter , The Propeller from the Southeastern Boating Association. Since I have been posting the west coast newsletter stuff I thought it only fair that you east coast guys a place to go as well. So here we go July 1957 edition. I'm with Steve, Dale. You are doing exactly what boatracingfacts is all about. I been wondering though about that dam. One guy sliced off part of the wooden dam and brought it back to the pits, and two others hit it, but were not hurt. Kind of scary to think about such a race course.

SEBA was the only association I knew about when I started in 1953. I Had joined the Atlanta Boat Club, which was required to race in SEBA and had bought a KG7 and Speedliner from another member. SEBA had races every weekend from May through September, and no more than three hundred miles from Atlanta. I first met Dieter in 1956 when he came over to promote his engines and was testing at the Atlanta Boat Club site on Lake Allatoona. He was staying with Scott Smith in Dallas, Ga. Scott and Al Bryant had joined the club to get the engines approved by SEBA and later NOA and APBA. This 1957 SEBA Propeller I remember well because at the Scottsboro championship, Dieter had loaned me a propeller and set up my three cylinder Koenig for the straight away time trials, which I set a record of 73 mph. The Scottsboro club after the races on Saturday had a Bar BQ in the pits and Dieter, Scott, Al and me had all gone through the line and sat down together to eat, when Dieter after taking a bite, got up, without saying anything, went down to the lake and washed the sauce off of the meat, it was too spicy for him. SEBA finally folded in the mid sixties and NOA took over in the southeast, and we would go to the APBA championships and races in Florida.

Thank you very much for what you do,putting this history up Dale.looks like dad was getting it done,not long after he started.we used to go have supper with the Lastingers and dad worked for Mr. Nettles.probaly built his motors.Nettles had a outboard,small engine repair and was also a mechanical contractor.After dad helped the hvac techs out some and he found out what they made,he told Nettles he wanted to move into hvac service and go to apprenticeship school.Mr. Nettles wanted to keep him,cause he was making money in motor repair,dad said,well i will go work for your competition.so my father became a hvac service tech and the small engine repair part of Nettles went away.
